Kumkum Bhagya TV Serial Review
Kumkum Bhagya is the first episode of a ten-part drama series based on the life of the legendary warrior queen, Indira Gandhi. The story revolves around the rivalry between her rival and the British Raj’s Queen, Diana Francesca. She is ruthless and wants to crush the British Raj at any cost. However, her sister Subhadra is desperately trying to bring about peace in the region and get support from the British. The role of Bhagya has received mixed reviews but does it deserve the same?
I have to admit that I was very excited to see the first episode. It was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the person who did the superb movie, Bandhan (also starring Bhagya). I found the movie very entertaining and gripping. Although, the production of the episode is top notch, I feel that some things are missing which might make the episode lose some of its appeal to me.
The first scene where the director allows the actress to do a series of shots in a stretch room is breathtaking. Bhagya is wearing a beautiful silk saree with intricate embroidery work on it. In the next scene we see her lying on the bed with her face covered with a pillow. The director seems to have inserted some amount of editing to enhance the close-up of her face when she is lying on the bed.I felt that the close-up shot of her face was a little too close and made me a little uncomfortable. It distracted my attention from what I was watching on screen. The other scenes where she was seen in the action, I thought they were slow. They just didn’t move fast enough for me.
I think the slow-mo and zoom-in techniques that are used in the movie are both deliberate and a clever idea. In the first few seconds we see the doctor talking to the boy’s mother. In those few seconds we get introduced to the character of Kumkum, but only for a few minutes. This gives us the perfect opportunity to develop our impression of the character. After all, we have seen her only briefly, and we know nothing about her.There are two sides to every story and we are presented with both in this film. On one side we have the girl we’ve seen from the first few minutes and then we have the person that we have glimpsed in the last few minutes. I thought the slow-mo and zoom-in technique added depth to the film, adding a little mystery to the characters as we wait to find out more about them. When we get to the end of the film we can decide whether or not we like the character.I don’t want to give too much away. The girl’s mother is interesting and puts a slightly different spin on things than we have been shown so far. When we meet Kumkum, she is so attractive that we immediately fall for her. The scenes with the three of them together are some of the best scenes of the film.
Overall, this movie is a good watch. The slow-mo and zoom-in techniques used to enhance the picture and add some mystery to the characters. However, it isn’t quite a great movie by itself. The other three films that are definitely worthy of your viewing include: The Informant! starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh, runner-up Apneapreneur, starring Nicholas Cage and also starring Anne Hathaway and Jodha Akhar.All in all, this movie is a decent and entertaining action movie. If you enjoy movies that tell an interesting plot, then I would recommend this one. However, if you aren’t a big action fan or you just aren’t into the genre then it might not be what you are looking for. It’s not too bad but it lacks a bit of momentum and that leads to some dull scenes. That being said, there are some very good sequences, which is the whole point of any movie. I can’t say it’s a classic, but I will say it’s worth seeing no matter how you feel about the rest of the movies that might not be part of the franchise.
I have to give props to the actual director for this movie. As someone who hadn’t really paid much attention to Bhagya’s previous movies, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The pace is fast paced, yet slow enough for it to create an air of mystery and suspense. There are some very memorable scenes including a well done fight scene. The fights scenes were choreographed like everything else in the movie and were extremely realistic.Overall, this movie is a fine watch. For people looking for an action packed, suspenseful thriller without a lot of characters or dialog, then this movie is perfect. For those looking for something a little more cerebral, with a great story and excellent acting, then I would recommend watching the other three movies that are part of the franchise. For those just looking for a good Hindi movie to watch, I would highly recommend this movie as a decent and fun action-adventure.
