Interpreting unemployment statistics in countries like Nigeria presents a significant challenge. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Nigeria’s unemployment rate was recorded at 33.3 percent. However, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has more recently reported lower unemployment rates of 5.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022 and 4.1 percent in the first quarter of 2023. These figures are based on the updated Nigeria Labour Force Survey (NLFS).
